The Boy Detective started as a recording project between two friends to sing ska-punk songs about their kids and wives and to get out of the house a few times a month but quickly became a much more unmanageable group of maniacs.
Nic Good (guitar, vocals, eating) and Benny Capaul (vocals, embalming) started right before covid shut the world down but the band utilized the time off to write and record Banned From the Bathtub in 2021. The duo emerged from covid hibernation the opposite of a bear: fatter, and more tired, but soon after, Geridan St Peter (trombone, shaved ice) and Seth Urban (saxophone, having a cool mom) signed on and the band played their first show in April of 2022.
A bit later, Ricky Held (bass, actual talent) joined and the band started the process of writing and recording Art Theft (2024). Hailed by critics as “pretty good”, the band used the momentum earned to launch themselves into the stratosphere, and also to buy some Nacho Fries at Taco Bell.
Oh, yeah. Zach Marshall (drums, being very nice), and Emily Steils (trumpet, loving LaCroix) joined in 2024. With the lineup as big as it’d ever been, the band decamped to Florida and recorded Disco Lunch (2025). Chad Opferman (various saxophones, reaching things on tall shelves), finally agreed to join the band, and they spent the next little bit touring with Five Iron Frenzy, Goldfinger, The Suicide Machines, Mustard Plug, The Impossibles, and playing way more shows than their wives were happy with.
And that leads us to now…what was your question again?
