whats up with this no-biking-in-the-streets thing? i noticed last year everyone was biking (even couriers!?) on the sidewalk. In Canada that is illegal - and extremely frustrating & rude. How is it different biking in the streets in Gainesville? Besides that crazy crash night (which i saw too, by the way, that was fucked!), drivers didn't seem particularly ridiculous and people were on scooters with no helmets or even pants on! That seems way more dangerous than riding your bike on a paved road with no wonky pedestrians in the way.

In most parts of gainesville there are bike lanes on both sides of the road, however, i assume you are talking about university, where the bike lane areas are roadside parking, most people choose to use the sidewalk instead of swerving into traffic to avoid parked cars, unless of course they are those super bike guys/gals with roadbikes that are easily pedaled along at the speed of traffic. just keep your eyes and ears open and dont do the awkward pedestrian thing where you arent sure which way to move out of the way.. gainesville bikers know what they are doing... ive only been clipped oh...maybe once by a drunk cyclist

I don't bike, but it seems like only bitches ride on sidewalks.

people considering riding bikes at night in crowded downtown areas with drunk people driving cars around should reconsider. bike lane or no bike lane.

it isnt until you're flying through the air and landing in the incoming traffic lane that you realize your 30 years of bicycle riding experience means absolutely nothing when you're around drunk ass drivers at night. i dont care what an elite fixie cyclist people think they are - riding a bicycle at night in crowded downtown areas with lots of bars should be avoided.

in some ways it is more dangerous than riding in the street. you will eventually get clipped by someone making a right hand turn by making a habit of riding on the sidewalks.

gainesville has bicycle couriers? those were probably just regular people on fixie's... in many cities here in the U.S. sidewalk riding is legal. without even looking at the laws - i cant imagine riding a bicycle in the street is illegal in gainesville. bicycles have the same rights as cars. likely the reason you saw so much sidewalk riding is people know riding at night in an area with so many drunk people is not smart. yay for common sense..

here in southern california ive actually gotten a ticket for riding on the sidewalk - but im in a large city and its illegal in the downtown area - they'll ticket you for jaywalking out here.

Also, as someone who commutes through downtown Gainesville every day, I rarely see people riding bikes on sidewalks. And if I do, they are most likely young children or adults with children in a carrier. We do have bike delivery here, and the couriers are definitely on the roads, not the sidewalks, unless maybe bypassing a bunch of fools taking up most of the street.
