I haven't used R in years, not since I switched to Humalog. Of course the pump wouldn't make sense if you usually take a shot just once a day Im type 1. 60 units lantus in the morning, then sliding scale with R if i need it, but as i said thats rare. My doc didnt wanna put me on anything else, because my hba1c levels are always 6. i used humalog and 70/30 back when i was first diagnosed for a couple months maybe, wasnt a fan, and neither was my doc. idk...

wow, I wanna know what the hell you eat and/or exercise. I take 40 units of Lantus, and then a sliding scale with Humalog, but I gotta take it every day. My last A1C was 7.8, which is better than they used to be, but not as good as when I was on the swim team in high school.
I used NPH for years, but that was before Lantus existed. Mixing it with R was a pain in the ass.

I used NPH for years, but that was before Lantus existed. Mixing it with R was a pain in the ass. when i was first diagnosed i was 16, and i had a per-meal carb limit i followed pretty strict. 60 for breakfast, 75 for lunch, 75 for dinner. 15 for snacks in between. since i went vegan about 3 years ago, i pretty much eat whatever whenever - not overboard crazy stuff obviously, im not downing 3 milkshakes with an entire pizza or anything haha. but much more laxed ya know? when im full im done, and i rarely count carbs unless its something i KNOW is chuck full of em after a full meal or something... like 4 small meals a day. Neil Barnard has done some pretty cool studies regarding diabetes and veganism. Its moreso specific in reversing type 2, but ive found my levels have been much more stable since, and no limits. In fact, ive bottomed out @ night a few times, and lower my lantus every now and then. Barnard did a thing where he had his subjects eat as much as they wanted, as long as it was whole food vegan. No limit, and everyone dramatically lowered their levels, and in some cases completely reversed it taking them off their meds. kinda neat? not to push views, just sharin something i found that worked. as far as exercise, i bike ride and im in a band? thats about it, haha. a bottle of R will last me ilke 3-4 months heh.

I recently went vegan and I have to make sure I get some kind of protein with my meal so that my blood sugar doesn't spike up and then come right back down before my insulin has been used up. I guess fat has a similar effect on blood sugar as protein; I need to look into that.
I don't know much about Lantus, but there's no way your regimen could work for me!

I'm vegetarian, and I do find that carb/protein balance is hard sometimes. I figured out that a half gallon of soy milk a day will give me all the protein I need for a low price, but I would feel bloated all the time!

Most Americans get WAY too much protein. The average guy only needs ABOUT 56 grams of protein a day (*about*, obviously different body types / sizes should be accounted for) theres a few different equations out there to figure out healthy amounts for your size.. oh, and if youre on a muscle building routine you obviously require a little more as well. depends if youre trying to lose or gain weight too, blahblahblah.... but if youre about 6 feet tall with an average amount of activity in your life you really dont need more than 70 on any given day.
and hell, theres protein in almost everything i eat. pnut butter, potatoes, tofu / tvp / tempeh, leafy greens, legumes, nuts, rice / grains, almond milk & smoothies... Ive never run into a problem of protein deficiency, ever.
In fact, my dr started running some extra blood tests with my blood work because he was worried, and he gave me a copy because he was so surprised how perfect everything was since i switched. (stuff like protein, iron, vitamin B, good / bad cholesterol, etc)
I was first worried about the carb intake on a vegan diet (obviously, since meat had none), but its been shown, and ive found that even when i intake a higher carb count, the body breaks it down differently, and i dont spike. ya know, simple vs complex carbs and all that jazz.
I mean some things still have a higher glycemic index of course: breads, cereals, liquids, yadda yadda... but i had that down way before goin veg so thats no biggy.
