Made national news here. An American general is asking them not to do it. Afghanis are marching to oppose it. Looks like the church got the attention it wanted. Hooray for more people hating America.

This guy is without a doubt a complete tool. If any anger is directed at anyone outside of his congregation then that is just complete stupidity. The folks that are protesting in Afghanistan are doing so for much greater reasons than this display of foolishness. If this one guy actually turned someone who was a happy peaceful person before to violence then I would be extremely surprised. The real problem here is that folks are talking about it. That he is allowed to stir up attention is absolutely ridiculous. This guy means nothing in the grand scheme of things and anyone that thinks he or his actions are a reflection of this community or country is horribly misinformed. The news outlets should have never picked up on the story.

of course - good post... your definitly right, that not this single action makes peaceful folks violent...

I think in that point it make sense to see the western countrys and the islam ones seperate as well.. for the islam ones, I guess the biggest problem is that it gives ammounition to the radicals.. to the ones preaching hate and kind of legalize violence.. of course there are more things like that.. the mohamed caricatures (?) in the danish newspaper and so on..

for the western countrys: I think it wasn't always easy to understand american foreign policy and a lot of people felt like US is acting as the sherif of the world.. I won't say they thought bad about the US overall, buit definitly questioning it and thinking they know why the US is no 1 target of the terrorists and there will be definitly peopel thinking "no wonder teh are no1 target"... also they simply forget that there have been attacks in tunesia on terrorists, the bombing of the underground in madrid, the attacks in London and countless attacks in iraq or afgahnistan whose targets were the local government and not primerly the foreign militar

but as you said the real problem is the media that picked up the story on the one hand, but also definitly the ones in the islamic countries picking it up and I'm sure they will say "The us is burning korans" and not like "50 idiots burning korans, while the majority of the states - the whole western world is totally against it.."

I am not exactly sure what you are trying to say. Absolutely no one in this thread suggested or condoned violence towards anyone. What this pastor is doing is not violent, just plain hateful and stupid. As far as American foreign policy goes, yes, foolishly, violence counteracts violence seems to be the standard. And we are far from the only ones that take this route. So in that respect you are correct. If that is what you were referring to.

I think the problem is easy to solve: I doubt that they got a fire permit, so the second the match hits the pile douse the shit out of it. Would probably still piss off Muslims, but at least this way we get 2 groups of retards pissed.

Relax, I wasn't suggesting that anybody on this board condoned any violence towards anybody else in any way.

My reference was towards what was being planned by this crazy group of fanatics. I believe (my belief, my opinion) that what the pastor and his congregation are planning to do is violent in nature. Like I said just my opinion, I understand that they are not causing physical harm directly to a particular person or peoples, but I still feel that the act of burning the Koran is somewhat of a violent act, which they are doing, as far as I understand, " to call attention that something's wrong. And it is possibly time for us in a new way to actually stand up and confront terrorism,". So a violent act to counteract another violent act just doesn't make sense to me.

As far as the press is saying over here is that the ceremony has been called off so maybe sense has prevailed in the long run.

My initial comment wasn't written as a "bash" towards anyone on this board or otherwise, it was just my opinion on a situation that sadden me.

he says he's canceling the burn because supposedly he talked to the Imam of the "Ground Zero Mosque" and they agreed to move the location in NY. Representatives of the project in NY say they have no clue what this guy is talking about.

basically, looks like he not only pussed out, but he's trying to spin bullshit to say he didn't really puss out.

what if Dove World Outreach Center burned their qurans/korans on 9/12, forgetting what day was 9/11? "we're doing this to remember."

Yeah, the guy made up that he was told that the NYC 'mosque' was being moved in exchange for him not doing it to save face, then acted a bit appalled when it was pointed out that this definitely wasn't happening, but didn't burn anything anyway.
