I'm going through a similar thing with an ex from HS. It's REALLY tough to keep my distance but I'd rather like myself in the long run. Dipping in someone else's turtle pie just isn't my thing.

What works well is if you put yourself in that other guys shoe and imagine yourself being the one getting cheated out of a relationship. If you'd feel bad, then that's a no-no. Just wait 'till he gets blown up or something.
