So I have a shitty presentation to do on "Why standardized test scores are a good basis for determining school/teacher effectiveness (particularly in relation to standards set forth by the "No Child Left Behind" Act)"

knowing Erica is a teacher, I jokingly asked her to tell me why standardized tests are so great, and she excitedly explained all the good points of it, and conveniently ignored the bad parts, and pointed me to a bunch of good resources.

and yes, it turns out she does talk that fast all the time, not just at Fest.

I can confirm it: Erica is, indeed, very kick-ass.

what's with all this talk of fast talking, I experienced it once with her, but only once it's not a constant thing

Schopenhauer wrote:
The human intellect is said to be so constituted that general ideas arise by abstraction from particular observations, and therefore come after them in point of time. If this is what actually occurs, as happens in the case of a man who has to depend solely upon his own experience for what he learns - who has no teacher and no book, - such a man knows quite well which of his particular observations belong to and are represented by each of his general ideas. He has a perfect acquaintance with both sides of his experience, and accordingly, he treats everything that comes in his way from a right standpoint. This might be called the natural method of education.

Contrarily, the artificial method is to hear what other people say, to learn and to read, and so to get your head crammed full of general ideas before you have any sort of extended acquaintance with the world as it is, and as you may see it for yourself. You will be told that the particular observations which go to make these general ideas will come to you later on in the course of experience; but until that time arrives, you apply your general ideas wrongly, you judge men and things from a wrong standpoint, you see them in a wrong light, and treat them in a wrong way. So it is that education perverts the mind.

But I digress. The educational system as it is now is, indeed, garbage. I especially love how they have no idea what to do with anybody that blows the tests out of the water. (Ask me how I know) They know something should be done to cater to them better, but they have no idea what. They just load them up with more work and call it a Gifted program. And then they shove the Magnet programs in failing schools hoping to attract kids capable of raising the schools' average and thus federal money. It's all stupid.

actually, i think it can be a pretty cool thing when someone can overlook the glaring faults in something and make a convincing argument for it.

For the record, I do not like standardized testing. I have a myriad of reasons I'd rather not go into, but to be a good debater, one must know the other side, and I do. That was Phil's topic so I was just helping him.

Again, I'd expand on the whole education system, but I'd rather get back to talking about how awesome I am. You guys rule :)

yes, Erica is awesome. I also do not really like standardized tests. Well, I like taking them, because I kick ass at them. But I have many problems with their concept and use on wide scales, though they do have some usefullness. But I didn't get to pick my side in the debate. AND ERICA IS SO AWESOME SHE WAS ABLE TO WHIP ME INTO A FRENZY OF WELL BACKED STANDARDIZED TEST SUPPORT!

America's education system DOES have some problems, but it's not nearly as bad as everyone thinks.
