any custom compliation of songs (primarily mixtapes) you make specifically for one person (or group) in mind always had such a science when selecting the right tracks for the right people(s). I know i always tried to blow my friends mind if i burned them a bunch of bands onto one CD because I remember one Hopeless records compliation I was given in middle school that was my first taste of some of my future favorite bands like: Dillinger Four, The Queers, Scared of Chaka, Against All Authority, and others like Fifteen & The Nobodys.

i instantly thought of discovering all that kinds of new music on Hopeless much like I did when I went to Fest last year and couldn't even try to avoid discovering new favorites if i wanted to (Off With Their Heads and Bomb The Music Industry i'm talking to you!)

another mixtape and Fest connection was last week i was at Park Ave in orlando buying my Fest pass i noticed that the nostalgic feel and visual presentation of a mixtape is being incorporated with modern technology in products such as this involving a USB drive:

is this something new or have music stores been shilling these for a while now?

I've heard of flash drive mp3 samplers, but I don't think they're really catching on.

That one you posted a link to is an interesting idea, the kitsch value of the cassette tape packaging might attract attention in a good way, but I think people will be turne doff by the fact that it only holds "up to 60 minutes" and it costs $20.

I think Go Kart Records put out an MP3 CD a few years ago with like 100 or 300 different bands or something.

I was thinking about this again earlier, how awesome it would be if there was a comp of nothing but amazing Richmond and Gainesville bands with all the songs about their hometowns

and it would of course be called "I-95"

My bf made me what we like to call a mixpod. He took my tiny little clip-on shuffle to load up a custom mix for me. Its just not the same as a mixtape, though...and there is no between song shout outs or memory snippets. Now that is how a mixtape is done!

I know some bands have given out flash drives with their album on it. can't think of who right now, but I've been at show where you get a flash drive with your cd or vinyl purchase.

I wonder if I'll get any of those at Austin City Limits next weekend?! Last year they gave out itunes cards with songs from the bands playing.

i kind of hope that Dillinger Four plays on a Saturday again this year, i thought it was one of the top moments i had last year despite the infamous technical difficulties they had the conversation about Baby Jesus, God and the direct correlation to the equipment was tremendous.

I really like the idea of civil war re-inactment style costumes, but i'd be lying if i said D4 is the Fest band that has me excited about costumes. that distinction belongs to Jersey's best dancers.... i mean jersey's biggest mouches... The Bouncing Souls.

also the main reason I don't want D4 having all the halloween fun on Friday is because as soon as I heard that Bouncing Souls are going to be playing on Halloween i instantly thought of the footage I've seen off their DVD when in their early days both the band and the crowd go all out for hometown Halloween shows every year with cheesy costumes and even cheeesy pop and 80's cover songs.

of course it's common knowledge now that they will be playing stuff off their early albums (maniacal laughter and good, bad,&argyle) to coincide with the fun, so I'm totally committed to Friday night with Greg, Michael, Bryan, and The Pete even though I said to all my Fest friends I wouldn't mind missing the Souls (a band i've seen atleast 6 times live) for a band I don't normally get a chance to see live.

all True Believers can't miss the chance for a slice of Jersey nostalgia
