hit the waldo flea market. thats some real americana for you. then go eat at adams rib co. awesome, awesome bbq. i'm not from the south either, but if i left here without tasting it, i'd be pissed.
Waldo Flea Market is not the best Flea Market I have ever been to, but it is definitely a good representation of Rural Southern Culture, and very close to Gainesville. If you're not too tired, I'd suggest hitting it up early on Saturday or Sunday, before the Fest kicks into gear for the day.

all out of towners should sell their old CDs to Hear Again, and not buy anything, that way I'll have treasure to find for months.

How easy is that to get to without car? Is there a bus or anything because it looks awesome.

It''s about 16 miles from the Holiday Inn (that' 27 km to you), I don't think there are any busses.

i went on this trail 2 weeks ago on the south east side. i think it was called la chua trail or la chua sink. there were about a million giant spiders that all hang at face level, and a gator pit with 10+ gators visible.
also, bob's river place is a handmade water park on a spring, about 30 minute drive outta gainesville. ive never been, but i've heard so much about it. cheap and fun, and i'm sure there will be people heading out there so maybe you can catch a ride.

Ask this guy, he seems to know. Some pretty amazingly white trash FL stuff going on in this blog. Weird I live on the Suwannee River and never even heard of this place:

Edit: Funny, only after posting that did I realize that I know Billy, ha! (Billy Rohan, the skater).

Same here. I thought I knew most of what there was to know about the Suwannee (springs, swimming holes etc), but I had never heard of this place. I'm assuming it's near Rock Bluff springs?

I emailed him but he still hasn't even read it yet. The Suwannee is a VERY long river. Could be anywhere on it really.

I think I said this already, but I'll say it again.
The day after the Fest, you should definitely go tubing on the Ichetucknee.
http://www.ichetuckneeriver.com/
I did that yesterday and I can't remember feeling this relaxed in ages.
