Who here skates?

Im taking a half day tomorrow as the weather is finally nice, plus i might hit a few spots tonight. havent had a chance to for ages.. yay!

Is Gainesville skateable? It looked it to me, but i dunno how the police are about it.. parks? I wouldn't attempt to bring my board all that way, but it'd be cool to run into some other skaters anyway.

i've been thinking about starting up again for a while now
mainly thought I don't have any money to get a new board since I lost mine in a house fire, that and now I would probably go out and skate for about 3 minutes, get pissed I can't ollie right, be really tired, and just call it a day

I used to skate, now I just keep one in the back of my car and tell myself I will pick it up again one day. I was never all that great anyway and I was really inconsistent. All I could do was pop shuvit, nollie 360 shuvit (could never do a regular 360 shuvit), heelflip, and varial kickflip (could never do a regular kickflip). And I always got a really bad mental block that kept me from being able to do anything higher than a 5 stair. I also have a bad temper so if I couldn't do anything after 3 attempts I would flip out and throw my board as far as I could. I broke alot of boards that way.

I used to skate quite a bit, kickflip/heelflip was about the peak of my powers. There was a sweet 5 step that I could 180 all day long that just never got boring.
There's something very special about nailing a trick and riding it away with that 'only a tiny percentage of the worlds population can do this' feeling. Happy days!

Oh, and I have destroyed my ankle to the point where the bone is shaped entirley different to the other one.

Still, you take the rough with the smooth.

Gainesville isn't too bad for skating, couple things downtown and you can take your chances at the University...

No more skateboarding for me though. So many broken ankles from my skating days that now they buckle sometimes just walking around. Not to mention my 40 pounds of married guy weight...haha!

Good grief, how depressing.. haha, well I'm out of practice but I got pretty decent when I used to work in a skateshop, and skate about 4 times a week with my buddy. The best spots here have all been anti-skater-ed to fuck though, it sucks.

However, I found this sweet little curb island round the back of the Lidl carpark by my work that is a normal curb on one side and rises up over about 6 feet of flat to a foot or so drop. Gonna see if I can't do some stuff with it later on.. c'mon work, hurry up and finish!

I tried skating in middle school, but I sucked, and never really got a chance to improve because none of the pavement near my house was smooth enough to skate on. By time I was old enough to get away from the house and into some nice parking lots, I had given up.

this was probably like 1992.

I skateboarded ever since I was a little kid up until '05 when I lost my skateboard company, my job, and my apartment. Which eventually lead me to Gainesville. I've been meaning to get a new one this summer though. I've been out of it too long.

I never skated - I was too fat and self-conscious, I think. I was always envious. I could get on the board, and, y'know, actually move on the thing, but I was never able to pull off an ollie.

there's gotta be some interesting story behind how that all ended for you.

I don't know why but the past couple weeks i've convinced myself I want to make a Skate video. Except not your typical 'look my friend can do a kickflip' thing, something more from a cinematic aspect.

thats about as close as i've come to finding something like the idea I have

LOOOONG ago, mostly around the early to mid 90s. I still skated a heavy ass 80s deck then, great exercise. I actually had muscle in my legs. Not so much into tricks. More into speed and distance. I loved going down hills really fast that I shouldn't even have thought about. I have an old Beer City deck rotting in my shed from when they started up in like '93 when the guy was selling decks out of his van. Still have a nice skate scar on my wrist too.

There are tons of places to skate in Gville, you've just got to look for them and hope to meet the right people. I know there are some standards like the "dirty garage" that people have always skated. This is right downtown Gville at the parking garage behind/next to the Top. Where the Wachovia building is. Just got to look for the wax.

I know there are secret ramp/bowl spots too that the public is unaware of. But there is the Gville Skatepark if you don't want to skate street. It is located behind Citizen's Field.

is that huge ramp with the roof over it, behind the warehouse in the middle of the woods still there? Don't remember exactly where it was at all, but I went to a couple of ARA benefit shows there, and bands would play on the back of a flatbed truck, right next to the ramp.
