My one abiding memory of doing Karaoke is being at the end of a day out on the lash and ending up at Hyde Park pub in Leeds just as it transformed into Karaoke night. Full of beans I strolled up to the counter, picked my song and triumphantly walked back to my mate who was loving every minute.
My name got called I went up and the music started. It sounded a bit weird and not at all familiar but I thought fuck it i'm drunk, i'll just sing along and have a laugh, the entire pub applauded me when I finished.
What I asked for was Huey Lewis and the News 'Power of Love'
What I got was Jennifer Rush 'Power of Love'
Sarcastic bastards in that pub!

Year before last's managers christmas party at work was a karaoke party on a canal boat cruising up and down the Manchester ship canal.
I dueted Kylie and Jason's 'Especially For You', and later got denied by one of the cash office team for a George/Elton extravaganza.

I wonder who I would have to talk to license out some songs, and start up a company? There are probably some bands I'd never be able to get, like I REALLY doubt anyone in Fugazi would let us do it, and Husker Du probably all hate each other and SST too much to sort out the legal bullshit. Just about anything has been made to karaoke already. But not everywhere has all the CDs. I think most places rent the karaoke systems/dvds. So what they have, is what you get. Then again, this place that claims to be "The World's Largest Karaoke Selection", doesn't have shit when i did a search for "punk": http://www.acekaraoke.com/themcol.htmlThe did have the Clash, the Ramones, the Pogues, DEVO, the Smiths... radio hits kinda stuff.
the thing with Karaoke CDs is that they will almost all be radio hits, and practically nothing from any bands that weren't on a major label.
I love DEVO, but I mostly wanna do songs of the first album, smaller labels usually just don't deal with the companies that make the karaoke discs. Even if they did, a lot of smaller labels don't have access to the masters, you'd have to go through the bands, or the masters may just be lost to time. Some smaller labels do keep good archives though. But if the masters can't be found, to make a version without the vocal track, you'd have to hire a band do a cover (which is what a lot of the songs on karaoke discs are).
So I have this little pipe dream about starting a company that specializes is punk karaoke discs, but there'd be way too much legal bullshit ot deal with, and really high start up costs.

I used to go to karaoke night at CG quite often. Now I'm too old to go out on Monday nights.
You can pretty much find karaoke in a different spot every night in Gainesville. Its true.

I know there's gonna be a lot on, but if time allows in the week of Fest.......
Pre/Post Fest Karaoke night anyone? Just throwing it out there.
Thinking about it, it'd be kinda awesome. I'm shotgunning Morrisey right now.

It was the closest bar to my house, so it was cool with me. The owner was an awesome guy anyway.

There are definitely some hard core karaoke people at Market Street on Sat nights!
One regular - I think his name is Sebastian, brings a blow up guitar and is partially deaf, so he puts on quite the show if you can bear to listen.
