The thread about our jobs made me wonder.
I'm unemployed, but finally going back to school. Ben having a hard time finding a job, but eveyr now and then I think it' possible to just take extra classes, and don't get a job, go WAY into debt, and finish school sooner, then pay everything off.
Haven't totalled it up lately, but I think I'm down to about $16,000

roughly 100k. Mortgages suck but at least the money isn't pissed away. If anyone here can buy a house do it--then get roomates to help pay off your mortgage. Renting will keep you a slave waaaay longer than a mortgage will.

This makes me feel a little better about my situation, but not very.
I don't owe a lot of money, just a couple hundred here and there. But still, that's right about renting . . . right now I'm considering ditching my apartment unless a third roommate comes along.

I almost feel like a mortgage doesn't count as "real debt" because you most likely would be paying that money in rent anyway. It's more like an investment than debt, for most practical purposes.

I agree about a mortgage not being debt. If my mortgage doesn't count, I officially have zero debt and I am proud of that fact.

Zero at the moment.
Once I go to school, I'm sure that will change.
Also, I wish you luck finding a job

Mortgages are a racket. You pay on that shit for 30 years, plus fixing roofs and plumbing and everything that can posssibly break. 30 years is forever. You might as well be renting. Believe me, figuring out how to replace stupid shower faucets is not worth the freedom to hang posters with nails.

£600 overdrawn, then £9,500 student loan, so roughly $20,200 then another £9,500 in september, and the september after that. Hooray for uni . Moving back to Australia when I finish though so leaving all my debt here haha.

Not to start an argument but that's not totally right.
You don't always finance for 30 years. Plus if you overpay your mortgage (example: one extra payment a year or $100 extra a month) you drop years off of what you owe.
Not to mention you can always sell your home and recoup some money. Even if you sell at a loss you get more back than what you'd get renting ($0.00).
Even if you're not a handy-(wo)man or whatever a simple run to the hardware store gives you years of knowledge for anything you might need.
The best part is you don't have thin walls reminding you of who's fucking/screaming/taking a shit next door to you.

I managed to avoid student loans when I was in uni by working part time a lot, but I've still not totally paid off my overdraft, so probably the equivalent of about $4k come the end of the month.
