Last year it was pre-Fest shows both Weds and Thurs at 1982 which was nice. You'll probably find a large UK contingent drinking down at Mothers prior to these shows as is the tradition.

not sure, but I think pre-fest shows start really early at 1982. I know they tend to get crowded pretty quickly.

It's been around about 8pm or so the last couple of years as the line up's got bigger.

Do bands play or is it a club or something? Sorry don't know anything about any of the venues. We're getting there Tuesday, does much happen on Tuesday or is that too early?

1982 is a small gig venue near Mothers and Gator Dawgs, probably about 150 capacity. There's usually about 6 or 7 bands on the Thursday and like Tim says, there was a gig on Wednesday too, which was cool.
Tuesday is a good day to get there because you'll have time to get your bearings and will probably be your only chance to just spend a night in the pub doing nothing but hanging out and drinking. There will be a few UKers (including me) there by that point and some of the locals can usually be tempted out for at least a jar. Mothers is your best bet in terms of finding early Festers.

No sweat. If you're in town early and in Mothers you should probably also give some thought to drinking the wall...
