Where abouts in the UK are you from? I've been to Chicago 5 times in the last few years and will be going again for a week or so on my way to Fest so I can probably give you a few pointers on where to go!
What kind of thing are you looking for? Touristy sight seeing stuff or bars and gigs? Do you have a place to stay? Accommodation isn't cheap there!
I am in Surrey, about 10 miles from Kingston.
We are only their from the Monday night to the Wednesday night. We have good intentions of doing the tourist thing but will probably just end up very drunk. Any bars that we should definitely go to?
Well you have to keep in mind I'm speaking as a tourist in Chicago rather than a resident so the locals may say I'm talking out of my ass but here's my opinion...
Stay in Lincoln Park....there's a backpackers hostel there that does private rooms...more like a prison cell with a pair of beds in it though! Also be warned, once out of the four times I've stayed there we got a room with bed bugs...that wasn't nice! The other times were fine. The place is safe, locks on doors, mostly tourists and organised tour people staying there.
If you want to spend a bit more then Days Inn in Lincoln Park is perfect...great location, clean, all you could need...ideal unless you're used to staying in the Hilton or something!
If you stay in Lincoln Park and you're in town on a Monday then certainly take a walk to Delilahs for Punk Rock Monday! It's a cool little bar, loads of different beers on tap and obviously plenty of punk rock! If you wanna keep drinking after 1 when it shuts (I think) then jump in a cab and go to Exit...it's a punk/biker bar place open until about 5 every night. I can't see it becoming my local if I lived there but can be fun once in a while so check it out.
If you happen to be a big Lawrence Arms fan then you may wanna go for a beer at L&L...it's a shit bar that Lawrence Arms and various other bands were known to hang out in and Larry Arms mentioned it on an old record....think Brendan sometime works there still. Again if you stay in Lincoln Park you can walk there easily.
As I start to plan my next visit I'm sure cool places will come to mind so I'll keep you updated.
Where in Surrey do you live then? Do you ever come to shows in Kingston?
Whoa. I live right by the L&L, and I totally didn't even know about it! Weird. I've got some friends coming into town for a couple days, might have to stumble home from there tonight.
